I haven't been here for almost a month--but I was on travel for work and have just been crazy busy as usual.

I'm still hand quilting...I took another pic and it looks very much like the last post! But I think I am past the halfway point. Just keep stitching!!

I found if I stay off social media I get more stitching done!

I did finish the Color Theory Quilt. My husband said the plaid fabric border was ugly, but I kinda of like it. I bought the entire bolt of that stuff-- for $15 at a storage unit sale, which equaled $1 a yard. Also used it on the back and binding.

I'm just happy I finished something!!

sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-64066615416831433542019-10-20T13:01:00.000-07:002019-10-20T13:01:38.625-07:00Back in the groove? Hopefully. I did my house chores first, then sewed all afternoon. Fabulous!!! I have not spent that much quality time in my sewing room for a while. I pieced the top of my guild's Color Theory Challenge. I've done a little free motion quilting practice and think I will just stipple the top.

I know you quilt from the inside to the edges, but practiced a bit on the border--I think I've still got it! I'm hoping to power through and get it done this week. Maybe a little at a time.

I also brought out a hand quilting project, and worked on it most of the morning. I removed the hoop and found it is so much easier for me to quilt. I think I'll just work on it like that. I know the hoop keeps the fabric taught, but it was just so cumbersome. I haven't hand quilted in many years and the clumsiness was holding me back. It is supposed to be a Christmas gift for my sister in law. The top was an 8th grade graduation present for her mother (my MIL). I don't know if Kristine will really appreciate it or not, but I think it will make her mother, Judy, very happy to see it finished.

It is just a simple nine patch so I am doing straight line quilting.

I'm excited to be quilting again. Now to see if I can keep up with this blogging business. :)sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-69429235823554368682019-07-17T11:38:00.000-07:002019-10-21T06:49:04.872-07:00Trying to end the funk!Yes! It is true...I have been in kind of a quilting/sewing/blogging funk. I do it to myself. I want to do so many things and get frustrated when I can't get it all done. Work has been crazy. Life has been busy. You get it.

I have been knitting. Knitting in the evening really calms me down and I love to knit. I didn't know that when I learned 7-8 years ago, but I do. I love it.

Sewing jazzes me up. If I sew at night, I am too revved up to sleep. I can't really see as well at night, so I have been balking at any type of hand sewing. I need to get over that.

I have also been somewhat intimidated by my ever growing pile of UFO's. I did make a huge step though--I bought the Washi Dress pattern and fabric on a trip to Indianapolis 6-7 years ago. A few years ago I finally started it. I was almost finished, except for the cap sleeves. It has been hanging in my sewing room for at least two years, waiting on those sleeves. I want to sew clothes for the grands, but wanted to finish the dress first. And the dress was still not finished, so I'm not sewing for the grands. I got everything out and realized I had lost the instructions. Rats!!! I emailed the kind designer, Rae Hoekstra, and her assistant sent me the directions. So yes! The dress is in the process of sleeves!!!

I think I will be finished tonight!!! Woohooo!!!

Maybe I am finally breaking out of my sewing funk!!!
March was nuts.

We bought a house. We did it. We've been talking about it for a while and decided to go for it. And then we found a great one we couldn't pass up. I was a bit worried about moving my world to the next town, but I really love it. I love the space, I love the calm. Our work commute increased by about 20 minutes, but I'm ok with that.

Oh yay! I thought I lost my post...

I did get a top pieced. It is a graduation gift for my niece. It is currently at the quilter's. I'm making matching pillow cases too. I used a Moda Bake Shop pattern, "Sunset Ridge".
I also caught up on our guild color challenge, which is to use the Handy Andy pattern to make two blocks each month in a prescribed color palette. So far, it has been a challenge to use colors I

Where have I been??? I have been so busy I haven't posted in a while..like 3 months!!!

Life has just been crazy here. I have been trying to sneak in a little sew time and today I finally got to sit still long enough ...... I finished Bonnie Hunter's Good Mystery Quilt!! I decided this year I wanted to use Christmas fabrics instead of the color scheme Bonnie had suggested. I think it will be fabulous to wrap up the grandkids each Christmas!

Unfortunately it was pouring rain this afternoon and I couldn't go outside to get a good picture, but I will post one soon.

I even pieced the back. I had this fabulous Christmas cookie recipe themed fabric. I added a row of pieced leftover four patch blocks down the center. Why did I make so many of these anyway??

Wish I had found them sooner, when I needed them!! Well, hopefully I can hand the quilt off this week to my quilter friend and let her work her long arm magic and quilt this baby for me. I am just so happy I finished!!! Now on to something else!

I finished Part 5 and I think I'm doing pretty good considering I had to catch up and I've been at work all week.

Part 6 progress shot:
I'm going to go to Texas tomorrow to help Mom as she broke her leg and can use a little assistance, so I will be back sewing in a week or two.
With the holidays and visiting family I became a little behind on the Quiltville Mystery Good Fortune! I knew I would have to wait to catch up, and thankfully Parts 2-4 were not too complicated. I know this project is not a race, and I will not be upset if I am a bit behind. I chose a Christmas fabric color scheme.

Part 3: I wonder what Bonnie has planned for those bonus half square triangles?
Next up: Part 5!!sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-70515082294989651132018-11-26T06:16:00.001-08:002018-11-26T07:31:16.214-08:00Good Fortune!Wow! Where has fall gone??? I have been so busy here in Crazy Sue land, but I am still knitting and quilting.

I couldn't resist---I HAD to join the Bonnie Hunter Quiltville Mystery--Good Fortune. Yeah, I really should be working on UFO's, but I knew if I didn't do it I would suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out). Just do it.

I wasn't wild about the color palette, so I decided to try using Christmas fabrics. I have a whole box. Once I got started playing in my box of fabrics, I realized that many were lots of colors and patterns that would not "read" well as red, green, or yellow, but would just look like a jumble of patterns and colors, so I made a quick trip to the quilt shop for a little stash enhancement. ;)

Part 1 was red and white four patches. I'm glad Bonnie went easy on us!

I entered two quilts and was thrilled to find out both received honorable mention.

"Too Much Yellow" was my versions of Bonnie Hunter's "On Ringo Lake" mystery. I added the nine patch square border.

My "Susan's Splendid Sampler" also won honorable mention. It was from Pat Sloan's Splendid Sampler I.
I managed to get a Splendid Sampler II block done yesterday. It was a cathedral window block designed by Jenny Doan. It was quick and easy--instant gratification.

I completely missed September!! I didn't stop knitting or quilting, just forgot to sit still long enough to post on the blog.

I finally finished Modern Wrapper Fine, in Brooklyn Tweed Loft. I had never used this yarn before, and wanted to try it. I think I started this over a year ago. It was not difficult, but I set it down a couple of times and forgot about it. Last month I just picked it up and dove right in. I guess I was finally ready to work on it.

Then ..... I lost in the game of yarn chicken!! I had about 20 rows left on the second sleeve and ran out of yarn. RATS!!! I was able to order more yarn, but it was a different dye lot. When I first looked at it, I thought it was a hair thicker and slightly lighter in color, but now that it is knitted, I (or anyone else I've asked) can't tell which sleeve I used the new skein on.

I'm really happy with it and can't wait for cooler weather so I can wear it. I think I will soak it again and see if it will soften up--the yarn is a bit scratchy, but it will be fine since it will be the outer layer.

Where has the summer gone?? I was pretty much offline for 3+ weeks for our wedding and honeymoon. I'm still trying to catch up with everything, but it's all good.

I've been trying to catch up with Splendid Sampler II. I'm only behind by two blocks now, I think.

After I trimmed the"Flowering Tree" paper pieced block I measured and saw it is not quite 6.5". I forgot to check the printed version before I started, and it is slightly smaller. I think it will be fine when I put all the blocks together, I just need to pay attention when I assemble the blocks. I completely forgot to check the scaling when I printed. Rats! I need to pay attention next time.

I'm hoping to sew two blocks by Thursday so I will be caught up by the time the next block is released.

I really enjoyed the first Splendid Sampler, so I knew I wanted to make the second one also. There are twenty 6-inch blocks , one block per week. Twenty blocks is manageable, right? You can find the Splendid Sampler II here. The blocks are designed by a team of designers, and there are several different techniques; piecing, paper piecing, applique, and embroidery. They also provide links for instructional videos. I even have a place to hang this when it is finished--I think it will be a perfect fit on the quilt rack in the kitchen.
Here are my first two blocks:

I still need to finish block 3-Clamshells. Hopefully I can sit still long enough to finish in the next day or two.

I'm also in clean up mode---my family is coming to visit for our wedding (yes, ME!!) in three weeks and I really need to get control of my sewing room mess. I'm donating extra "stuff" to our guild's next quilt show boutique. I have a box in the closet to collect those things as I come across them. I'm placing books and magazines that don't really interest me right into the box. I'm deconstructing some items---purses and blocks I made as class samples or things I didn't really like. I'm returning the scraps to my scrap bin. It is really quite satisfying to take something apart and put the pieces away.

I'm also recycling patterns that I printed and don't really want or need, and I'm placing loose patterns with the notebook--maybe one day I'll actually place them IN the notebook, but for now that's as close as I'm going to get.

It is the Seashell pattern in Valley yarns silk alpaca. I really love the way it turned out.

The color is a bit on the cream side for my white dress, but I'll wear it anyways. When I was about halfway through, I started thinking a pale lavender would have been nice, but I wasn't going to stop.
I think I will get a lot of use out of it.

I think I may sew a small storage bag for it so it doesn't get snagged in my closet. How do you store your shawls? Mine are folded up in a box in my closet, but the box is now overflowing so I need to come up with something better.

And----it is finished 3 weeks before the wedding. Three weeks!!! Gasp!!!sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-9702306143125990872018-06-10T16:51:00.002-07:002018-06-11T06:22:30.662-07:00Bento Box Quilt Finish!I am SO glad I quilted this one by checkbook. Cynthia Reaves did a beautiful job with the quilting. The quilt ended up about queen size, and I would have really struggled to quilt it on my sewing machine. I sewed the binding on this weekend--I was on a mission!
Not the best picture, but you get the idea. The green is more lime than yellow.

I also made a pillowcase and sewed on the label. Ready to mail!

Now on to the next project!
May 31-June 1 I attended the MQA June Gathering in Jackson, MS. I had never been before and had a great time! I am so inspired and can't wait to get back into my sewing room.

Friday I took a class with Bonnie Hunter, Winston Ways. I took a class with her several years ago, and I participate in her online mystery almost every year, so I didn't think I would really learn anything-----WRONG!!!

The class was so large that it was in three rooms. I was kinda bummed that I was not in the main room for the class, but it turns out that I had the perfect spot! I set up my sewing station at the end of the row next to a window that faced out over the playground with a view of a lovely Texas lilac in full bloom.
I bought this little Bernina a couple of years ago JUST for travel and have not used it much. I had fun getting acquainted again. Perfect for travel. I hate to break down my big machine, pack it up and drag it around. This is much better.

Light bulb moment #1: I was sewing my four patches together wrong! I was feeding them into the machine upside down. Wow!

Light bulb moment #2: Webbing. I never understood what that meant. Now I get it. :)

Instead of sewing each block individually, you chain piece in rows vertically and then horizontally. I need to practice this method to see if I can assemble faster.

I had a lovely day sewing and the two light bulb moments made the class totally worth my time.

Saturday I took a crazy quilt class. I made one block. It was not really all that "crazy", but I wanted to make a pillow for my granddaughter so I already had a design in mind.

I want to embroider a bouquet of silk flowers in the center.

Now I just need time to stay home and sew!!!sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-35388672064251267762018-05-07T03:34:00.000-07:002018-05-07T03:34:12.130-07:00Bento Box UpdateWell, I had hoped to be farther along on the Bento Box quilt, but I'm getting there.
I'm hoping to be done with blocks so I can piece the top next weekend.
She likes lime green, and I scored an entire bolt of this green dot last fall for $15! That's $1 a yard!!! Score!!

I thought a Bento Box pattern would be fun. I started shopping my stash:

I also went to the Gulf States Quilt Association in Slidell, LA on Saturday. I had three quilts entered, and was excited that my "On Ringo Lake" Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt won 3rd place init's division. It was quilted by Cynthia Reaves--she did a fabulous job. I think I got marked down because I lost a few points in my border squares---accuracy is something I have really been working on, and there is still room for improvement!
I'm in south Mississippi and I am freezing in April. Yeah, I'll probably complain about the heat later (not really, I like the heat).

My quilts reached a point of finish and will be hanging in the show next weekend. If you live near New Orleans, the Gulf States Quilt Association Show is in Slidell at the Harbor Center(?) April 13-14. It's usually a big show with vendor mall, demos, etc. My Splendid Sampler could use more quilting, but it is hanging. The Row by Row quilt with the row that shredded in the wash--I just starched and ironed it. It was all I could do. That row is in the center of the quilt, wouldn't you know it.

I finished a big project:
My first grandbaby's quilt, bumper pads and crib skirt are done! Now we are ready for baby!
I think I have about 10 days to get everything together.

On Ringo Lake is finished, except the label. It can go to the show without a label.

Splendid Sampler---OMG! I never finished quilting it!! So this is my current view:

I wanted to quilt it myself, so first I quilted the grid between the blocks. Next, I am doing decorative (hopefully) quilting in each block. I think I have it over half way done, and I still need to sew the binding and a sleeve.

I also want to enter my Row By Row quilt, but it needs fixing. My dog Jake decided to lift his leg on it. He's a big dog, so lots of pee. Yuck. I didn't think hand washing would be enough so I put it in the washer....big mistake. One of the blocks really shredded !!! I sewed and quilted all the blocks the same, but one store used a fusible that did not hold up well in the wash. I'm quite bummed. I think I'll try to starch and press first, to see if I can get it to behave. I will have to replace a few of the fabrics. I don't want to post a pic--because then everyone will know which shop it came from. I don't want to call them out, but I thought it would hold up better than that. The rest of the quilt came out fine.

Hmmm.....10 days!!! I'd better get back to it!
It's been over a month since I posted??? Travel will do that!

Grandbaby prep is in high speed !! We are less than 6 weeks to due date for our first grandbaby and we are just so excited.

I made bumper pads for the crib. I used the pattern https://www.fairfieldworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/ClassicBabyBumpers-PATTERN.pdf and ordered the precut foam panels from Joann's fabrics. They were not complicated, and I don't know why it took me so long to get them finished, but I did take my time and they look nice, so everyone is happy.
I just need to make a simple crib skirt this weekend.

I found this darling baby sweater pattern, 5 Hour Baby Sweater. It took me a bit longer than 5 hours, but it was easy and a very fun knit. I will definitely make it again. I used some of the Louet Gems yarn I got at a rummage sale last year. Great find--beautiful yarn. I had a two hour wait for the Galveston ferry. Glad I went to the bathroom before I got in line!
This is just the cutest sweater!!

All the sweater needs is the sleeve seams sewn and ends woven in.

And a baby!sklinn62http://www.blogger.com/profile/12127114031737038390noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1332635081384694863.post-80200439484674848402018-02-12T06:09:00.001-08:002018-02-12T06:10:29.750-08:00Happy Lundi Gras! The day before Fat Tuesday, of course!

On Ringo Lake is finished and ready for the quilter!!! I had one side that was apparently about 1 inch shorter than the other. Took me a WEEK to get that one side in. I ripped out and re-sewed three times!!! It was worth it. The corners would not match if the borders were not sewn correctly.

Corner fail!

Much better! Not perfect, but acceptable. Whew!

And I pieced the back. I have a strip of leftover border pieces and some "what was I thinking" fabric strips. I needed the extra width.

I am just SO happy I am done!!I really have to force myself to finish something. I just want to slap some wide fabric borders on and call things done, but I knew I would be happier if I made the extra effort. Whew!

Woo hooo!!!! On Ringo Lake, Bonnie Hunter's 2018 Mystery Quilt top is complete--almost! If is a bit shy of 75" by 90". so I am adding a pieced border. I'm making a square in a square border set on point, and the square is the same 9 patch as the block centers. I made good progress this weekend and have my 3x3s ready to assemble the nine patches.

I'm trying to have this ready for the quilter on Thursday. Wish me luck!
I have made time to knit, of course.

I'm celebrating a finish! I finished weaving the ends on Sunny Baby Blanket for my first grandbaby, Ann Marie yesterday.

So sweet!!

I pulled out my Modern Wrapper Fine ( a Churchmouse Yarn and Teas pattern) in blue Brooklyn Tweed Loft. I have no idea where I am, but I want the sweater so I'd better get to it. I also saw several sets of needles tied up with that sweater. So after studying the pattern for a while, I finally figured out that I am almost finished with the left front. I thought all it needed was sleeves. Apparently not. I need to just jump back in there.

I also started a new pair of socks in good ol Patons Kroy sock yarn for me. It looks like black and gray stripes. I need a pair of socks to wear with black pants that are not so screaming bright. I travel for work often, and need socks that look a little more, uh, adult.

I tried out the new Addi Flexi Tips needles, which you use like double points (three in a package) and they have a nylon(?) cable in the middle of two metal tips. I didn't really like them for socks, but I may try them again for baby socks.

Maybe this weekend I will get brave and give my Modern Wrapper Fine another try.
